The moment you start thinking;
1. I'm older than him but he's become richer than me.
2. I'm more beautiful than her but she's got a nicer husband than me.
3. I'm from a better and affluent home so why should he be brilliant than me?
4. I'm older than her so why should she marry before me?
5. I'm married before her, she's conceived and given birth yet I don't know when i will be pregnant, what's wrong with me, why me ?
6.I'm into the business before her so how come she surpassed me in customers and wealth?
7. I taught him when we were writing WASCCE , he's a Medical Doctor now and I'm struggling with HND.
8. I trained him when he was employed here so why uplift his rank above me?
9. We entered medical school togetheror I even entered before him but he's graduating before me
10. Why am I always falling sick or encountering one problem or the other while others are not?
And this .....and that...
My dear, don't go far but start repenting to Allaah SWT because you are being ungrateful. Who are we to question Allaah's decree? Do we know what is better for us than Allaah SWT? A BIG NO!!!
Remembere Allaah's verse:
......."La'in shakartum la aziidannakum wa la'in kafartum inna azaabii la shadeed_ (If you are grateful, I will surely increase you(in favour); but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe)” (Qur'an 14:7).
The prophet advised us to always look at those that we're better than and not those that are better than us so that we'll be grateful for the favours of Almighty Allah on us
Dear, in times of distress look at Allaah's favour on you over others and be grateful rather than questioning why things don't happen the way you want, we know not but Allaah knows best. Every destiny has it's time to be fulfilled, WAIT! WAIT!! PLEASE WAIT FOR ALLAAH'S TIME IS THE BEST.

Preparation
1. Place one tortilla on a flat surface and spread 2 tbsp of peanut butter on the tortilla to evenly coat.
2. Place one banana near the edge of the tortilla and roll it up.
3. Slice into 1/2 inch rounds and serve.
*If your tortilla bread is stiff, you can put it in the microwave in between two pieces of moist paper towel and heat for 15-20 seconds or until softened.

🌍HUDUBAR ANNABI MUHAMMAD SALLALLAHU ALAIHI WASALLAM WANDA YAYI A KHUDUBAR RANAR TARA GA WATAN ZUL-HIJJAH, SHEKARA TA GOMA DA HIJIRA A DUTSEN ARAFAT (RANAR ARFA KENAN). 🌍
ANNABI (SAW)YA FARA DACEWA: 🌍
“Ya ku mutane ku bani hankalinku, domin mai Yiwuwa bazan sake kasancewa da ku bayan wannan shekaran ba, saboda haka ku saurari abinda nake gaya maku da kyau, kuma (ku isar da abinda zan gaya maku) ga wadanda basa wannan wuri a yau.
Ya ku mutane kamar yadda kuka riki wannan wata, (na hajji) da wannan rana (ta arfa) da kuma wannan gari (na Makka) da girma kuma abin tsarewa, to, haka kuma ku riki Ran Musulmi da kuma Dukiyoyinsu da girma abin kuma karewa, ku maida wa Mutane kayan da suka baku Amana. Kar ku cuci kowa, saboda kar wasu su cuce ku, ku tuna fa, hakika ALLAH zai yi sakayya akan ayukakanku, ALLAH (SWT) ya hana cin riba,(wato kudin ruwa) saboda haka, duk abin da aka kulla ta kudin ruwa sai an warware shi.
Ku yi hattara da shaidan, domin kiyaye Addininku. Yanzu kan ya fidda ran batar da ku akan manyan abubuwa (na sabo) saboda haka ku guji binshi akan kanana.
Ya ku jamaa hakika kuna da hakki bisa matayenku, amma suma suna da hakki bisa kanku, to hakkin su ne akanku da kuciyar dasu, Kuma ku tufatar dasu akan jin kai. ku bi dasu kyakkyawan biyarwa, ku kuma tausasa musu domin su majibintan al amurran kune, kuma mataimakan ku, Hakki ne akansu da kar su yi abota da duk wanda ba kwa so, kuma su nisanci zina.
Ya ku jama'a kuyi kyakkyawan bauta ga ALLAH (SWT) ku tsaida salloli biyar(5) na farilla, Ku Azumci Watan Ramadan ku Kuma bada zakka. Ku aikata aikin hajji in har kun sami daman yi. KU SANI FA, ko wane musulmi dan uwan musulmi ne. Dukkan ku dai dai kuke. Ba wanda yake da fifiko saman wani sai ta tsoron ALLAH, da aikata kyawawan ayyukka.
Ku tuna fa(ya ku jama'a) wata rana za ku tsaya gaban ubangijinku, domin sakamakon ayyukanku, saboda haka ku yi hattara kada ku yi sake da hanya madaidaiciya bayan na kau.
Ya ku jama'a ba wani annabi ko manzo da zai zo bayana kuma babu wani addini da zai zo (bayan addinin musulunci), saboda haka kuyi tunani sosai akan wannan magana dana gaya maku, kuma ku fahimce ta (sosai).
Zan bar maku abubuwa guda biyu (2); ga (alkur ani) ga kuma (sunnah) ta. In kun bi wannan ba za ku ta ba bata ba. Duk Wanda ya ji wannan sako to ya jiyar da wadansu, suma su jiyar da wasunsu, kuma sau da yawa wadanda za su ji magana daga karshe sufi masu ji na yanzu fahimtar abinda nake fada.
YA ALLAH ka zamo shaida agareni, cewa na isar da aikenka zuwa ga bayinka.” Yan uwa ku watsa wannan KHUDUBAR ga yan uwa musulmi wanda kamar yau akayi ta!!!
Allah duk wanda ya tura wannan khuduba ya Allah ka sadashi da annabin MuhammadMuhammad (saw) ya Allah kabiya masa dukkan bukatunsa na alkhairi

“Ya ku mutane ku bani hankalinku, domin mai Yiwuwa bazan sake kasancewa da ku bayan wannan shekaran ba, saboda haka ku saurari abinda nake gaya maku da kyau, kuma (ku isar da abinda zan gaya maku) ga wadanda basa wannan wuri a yau.
Ya ku mutane kamar yadda kuka riki wannan wata, (na hajji) da wannan rana (ta arfa) da kuma wannan gari (na Makka) da girma kuma abin tsarewa, to, haka kuma ku riki Ran Musulmi da kuma Dukiyoyinsu da girma abin kuma karewa, ku maida wa Mutane kayan da suka baku Amana. Kar ku cuci kowa, saboda kar wasu su cuce ku, ku tuna fa, hakika ALLAH zai yi sakayya akan ayukakanku, ALLAH (SWT) ya hana cin riba,(wato kudin ruwa) saboda haka, duk abin da aka kulla ta kudin ruwa sai an warware shi.
Ku yi hattara da shaidan, domin kiyaye Addininku. Yanzu kan ya fidda ran batar da ku akan manyan abubuwa (na sabo) saboda haka ku guji binshi akan kanana.
Ya ku jamaa hakika kuna da hakki bisa matayenku, amma suma suna da hakki bisa kanku, to hakkin su ne akanku da kuciyar dasu, Kuma ku tufatar dasu akan jin kai. ku bi dasu kyakkyawan biyarwa, ku kuma tausasa musu domin su majibintan al amurran kune, kuma mataimakan ku, Hakki ne akansu da kar su yi abota da duk wanda ba kwa so, kuma su nisanci zina.
Ya ku jama'a kuyi kyakkyawan bauta ga ALLAH (SWT) ku tsaida salloli biyar(5) na farilla, Ku Azumci Watan Ramadan ku Kuma bada zakka. Ku aikata aikin hajji in har kun sami daman yi. KU SANI FA, ko wane musulmi dan uwan musulmi ne. Dukkan ku dai dai kuke. Ba wanda yake da fifiko saman wani sai ta tsoron ALLAH, da aikata kyawawan ayyukka.
Ku tuna fa(ya ku jama'a) wata rana za ku tsaya gaban ubangijinku, domin sakamakon ayyukanku, saboda haka ku yi hattara kada ku yi sake da hanya madaidaiciya bayan na kau.
Ya ku jama'a ba wani annabi ko manzo da zai zo bayana kuma babu wani addini da zai zo (bayan addinin musulunci), saboda haka kuyi tunani sosai akan wannan magana dana gaya maku, kuma ku fahimce ta (sosai).
Zan bar maku abubuwa guda biyu (2); ga (alkur ani) ga kuma (sunnah) ta. In kun bi wannan ba za ku ta ba bata ba. Duk Wanda ya ji wannan sako to ya jiyar da wadansu, suma su jiyar da wasunsu, kuma sau da yawa wadanda za su ji magana daga karshe sufi masu ji na yanzu fahimtar abinda nake fada.
YA ALLAH ka zamo shaida agareni, cewa na isar da aikenka zuwa ga bayinka.” Yan uwa ku watsa wannan KHUDUBAR ga yan uwa musulmi wanda kamar yau akayi ta!!!
Allah duk wanda ya tura wannan khuduba ya Allah ka sadashi da annabin MuhammadMuhammad (saw) ya Allah kabiya masa dukkan bukatunsa na alkhairi

Do a HAJJ before going to bed. 〰
Very interesting. Takes only 2 mins to read.
★The Holy Prophet (SAWS) one day said to Hz.Ali (R.A.) : Ya Ali! Do these 5 things before going to bed at night:
◆ 1. Give 4000 Dinars in Sadaqa and then sleep.
◆2. Read 1 complete Quran and then sleep.
◆3. Pay the price for Janna'h and then sleep.
◆4. Make two people happy with each other when they are upset and then sleep.
◆5. Do 1 Hajj and then sleep.
★Hazrat Ali (R.A.) said, Ya RasulAllah! This looks impossible. How will I be able to do it? Then the Prophet (SAWS) replied:
◆4 times reading surah Fatiha is equivalent to 4,000 Dinars giving in Sadaqa.
◆3 times reading surah Ikhlas (Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad) equals to one complete Quran.
◆3 times reading any durood shareef (Shortest: Sallalahu Alaihi Wa Salam) is the price of jannah.
◆10 times Astagfirullah (or any istighfar) is equal to making two unhappy people happy with each other.
◆12 times Kalima is equals to one Hajj. ( The Shada )
★After this Ali (R.A.) said, Ya RasulAllah (SAWS)! Now I will do all these before going to bed.
★It takes less than 5 mins for all the above zikr and look at the virtues for it? Who would not want to have all these virtues to be in their book of good deeds.
★To remind oneself of it, the easiest way is to write down on a piece of paper all the above zikr to be done before going to sleep and stick that piece of paper just next to your bed.... and of course ALLAH is the one to remind.
It will be very nice of you if you could Please forward this to as many Muslims as possible because if anyone starts doing these Aamaal then there is no doubt that you will also be rewarded for it.

SIMPLE WAYS TO SHOW COURTESY
1. In case you miss a call, drop a message as soon as possible if you're unable to call back.
2. Pay back borrowed money as soon as possible no matter how little the amount is. Don't assume that they don't need it, and never make them ask you for it.
3. Turn the volume down when you're watching video, playing music or playing a game on your phone in a public place or, better
yet, use headphones.
4. Don't press your phone or use headphones when someone is having a conversation with you.
Unplug the headsets from your ears even if nothing is playing and give them your undivided attention.
5. When using someone else's phone or computer, don't go through their stuff without permission.
6. Always leave the last piece of meat for the person who bought it unless they insist they won't eat it.
7. Don't use loudspeaker of the phone to have a two person conversation unless you are unable to hold the phone.
8. When someone else cooks for you, offer to help clean the kitchen.

Young King Arthur was ambushed and imprisoned by the monarch of a neighbouring kingdom.

Such a question would perplex even the most knowledgeable man. And to young Arthur, it seemed an impossible query. But, since it was better than death, he accepted the monarch's proposition to have an answer by year's end.
He returned to his kingdom and began to poll everyone: the princess, the priests, the wise men, and even the court jester. He spoke with everyone, but no one could give him a satisfactory answer.
Many people advised him to consult the old witch, for only she would have the answer. But the price would be high as the witch was famous throughout the kingdom for the exorbitant prices she charged.
The last day of the year arrived and Arthur had no choice but to talk to the witch. She agreed to answer the question, but first he would have to agree to her price.
The old witch wanted to marry Sir Lancelot, the most noble of the Knights of the Round Table, and Arthur's closest friend. Young Arthur was horrified.
She was hunch-backed and hideous, had only one tooth, smelled like sewage, made obscene noises, etc.
He had never encountered such a repugnant creature in all his life. He refused to force his friend to marry her and endure such a terrible burden.
But Lancelot, having learnt of the proposal, spoke with Arthur. He said nothing was too big of a sacrifice compared to Arthur's life. And the reservation of the Round Table. Hence, a wedding was proclaimed and the witch answered.
Arthur's question thus:
"What a woman really wants?"
She said, "A woman wants to be in charge of her own life."
Everyone in the kingdom instantly knew that the witch had uttered a great truth, and that Arthur's life would be spared. And so it was. The neighbouring monarch granted Arthur his freedom. And Lancelot and the witch had a wonderful wedding.
The honeymoon hour approached and, Lancelot, steeling himself for a horrific experience, entered the bedroom. But, what a sight awaited him.
The most beautiful woman he had ever seen was sitting by the bed.
The astounded Lancelot asked what had happened. The beauty replied that since he had been so kind to her when she appeared as a witch, she would henceforth become her horrible and deformed self only half the time, and be the beautiful maiden the other half.

The Husband Who Was Too Shy To Look At His Wife (a moving story)

This story was recounted by Prof. Khalid Al-Jubeir, consulting cardiovascular surgeon, in one of his lectures:
Once I operated on a two and a half year old child. It was Tuesday, and on Wednesday the child was in good health. On Thursday at 11:15 am – and I’ll never forget the time because of the shock I experienced – one of the nurses informed me that the heart and breathing of the child had stopped.
I hurried to the child and performed cardiac massage for 45 minutes and during that entire time the heart would not work.
Then, ALLAH decreed for the heart to resume function and we thanked HIM. I went to inform the child’s family about his condition. As you know, it is very difficult to inform the patient’s family about his condition when it’s bad.
This is one of the most difficult situations a doctor is subjected to but it is necessary. So I looked for the child’s father whom I couldn’t find. Then I found his mother.
I told her that the child’s cardiac arrest was due to bleeding in his throat; we don’t know the cause of this bleeding and fear that his brain is dead. So how do you think she responded? Did she cry? Did she blame me? No, nothing of the sort. Instead, she said “Alhamdulillah” (All Praise is due to ALLAH) and left me.
After 10 days, the child started moving. We thanked ALLAH and were happy that his brain condition was reasonable.
After 12 days, the heart stopped again because of the same bleeding. We performed another cardiac massage for 45 minutes but this time his heart didn’t respond. I told his mother that there was no hope. So she said: “Alhamdulillah.
O ALLAH, if there is good in his recovery, then cure him, O my Lord.”
With the grace of ALLAH, his heart started functioning again. He suffered six similar cardiac arrests till a trachea specialist was able to stop the bleeding and the heart started working properly. Now, three and a half months had passed and the child was recovering but did not move.
Then just as he started moving, he was afflicted with a very large and strange pus-filled abscess in his head, the likes of which I had never seen. I informed his mother of the serious development. She said “Alhamdulillah” and left me.
We immediately turned him over to the surgical unit that deals with the brain and nervous system and they took over his treatment. Three weeks later, the boy recovered from this abscess but was still not moving. Two weeks pass and he suffers from a strange blood poisoning and his temperature reaches 41.2°C (106°F).
I again informed his mother of the serious development and she said with patience and certainty: “Alhamdulillah. O ALLAH, if there is good in his recovery, then cure him.”
After seeing his mother who was with her child at Bed#5, I went to see another child at Bed#6. I found that child’s mother crying and screaming, “Doctor! Doctor! Do something! The boy’s temperature reached 37.6°C (99.68°F)!
He’s going to die! He’s going to die!” I said with surprise, “Look at the mother of that child in Bed#5. Her child’s fever is over 41°C (106°F), yet she is patient and praises ALLAH.” So she replied: “That woman isn’t conscious and has no senses”.
At that point, I remembered the great Hadith of the Prophet (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa Sallam): “Blessed are the strangers.” Just two words… but indeed two words that shake a nation! In 23 years of hospital service, I have never seen the likes of this patient sister.
We continued to care for him. Now, six and a half months have passed and the boy finally came out of the recovery unit – not talking, not seeing, not hearing, not moving, not smiling, and with an open chest in which you can see his beating heart. The mother changed the dressing regularly and remained patient and hopeful.
Do you know what happened after that? Before I inform you, what do you think are the prospects of a child who has passed through all these dangers, agonies, and diseases? And what do you expect this patient mother to do whose child is at the brink of the grave and who is unable to do anything except supplicate and beseech ALLAH? Do you know what happened two and a half months later?
The boy was completely cured by the mercy of ALLAH and as a reward for this pious mother. He now races his mother with his feet as if nothing happened and he became sound and healthy as he was before.
The story doesn’t end here. This is not what moved me and brought tears to my eyes. What filled my eyes with tears is what follows:
One and a half years after the child left the hospital, one of the brothers from the Operations Unit informed me that a man, his wife and two children wanted to see me.
I asked who they were and he replied that he didn’t know them. So I went to see them, and I found the parents of the same child whom I operated upon. He was now five years old and like a flower in good health – as if nothing happened to him. With them also was a four-month old newborn.
I welcomed them kindly and then jokingly asked the father whether the newborn was the 13th or 14th child. He looked at me with an astonishing smile as if he pitied me. He then said, “This is the second child, and the child upon whom you operated is our first born, bestowed upon us after 17 years of infertility. And after being granted that child, he was afflicted with the conditions that you’ve seen.”
At hearing this, I couldn’t control myself and my eyes filled with tears. I then involuntarily grabbed the man by the arm, and pulling him to my room, asked him about his wife:
“Who is this wife of yours who after 17 years of infertility has this much patience with all the fatal conditions that afflict her first born?! Her heart cannot be barren! It must be fertile with Imaan!”Do you know what he said? Listen carefully my dear brothers and sisters. He said, “I was married to this woman for 19 years and for all these years she has never missed the [late] night prayers except due to an authorized excuse.
I have never witnessed her backbiting, gossiping, or lying. Whenever I leave home or return, she opens the door, supplicates for me, and receives me hospitably. And in everything she does, she demonstrates the utmost love, care, courtesy, and compassion.” The man completed by saying, “Indeed, doctor, because of all the noble manners and affection with which she treats me, I’m shy to lift up my eyes and look at her.

A true demonstration of a Muslimah in this time of ours.

The Husband Who Was Too Shy To Look At His Wife (a moving story)

This story was recounted by Prof. Khalid Al-Jubeir, consulting cardiovascular surgeon, in one of his lectures:
Once I operated on a two and a half year old child. It was Tuesday, and on Wednesday the child was in good health. On Thursday at 11:15 am – and I’ll never forget the time because of the shock I experienced – one of the nurses informed me that the heart and breathing of the child had stopped.
I hurried to the child and performed cardiac massage for 45 minutes and during that entire time the heart would not work.
Then, ALLAH decreed for the heart to resume function and we thanked HIM. I went to inform the child’s family about his condition. As you know, it is very difficult to inform the patient’s family about his condition when it’s bad.
This is one of the most difficult situations a doctor is subjected to but it is necessary. So I looked for the child’s father whom I couldn’t find. Then I found his mother.
I told her that the child’s cardiac arrest was due to bleeding in his throat; we don’t know the cause of this bleeding and fear that his brain is dead. So how do you think she responded? Did she cry? Did she blame me? No, nothing of the sort. Instead, she said “Alhamdulillah” (All Praise is due to ALLAH) and left me.
After 10 days, the child started moving. We thanked ALLAH and were happy that his brain condition was reasonable.
After 12 days, the heart stopped again because of the same bleeding. We performed another cardiac massage for 45 minutes but this time his heart didn’t respond. I told his mother that there was no hope. So she said: “Alhamdulillah.
O ALLAH, if there is good in his recovery, then cure him, O my Lord.”
With the grace of ALLAH, his heart started functioning again. He suffered six similar cardiac arrests till a trachea specialist was able to stop the bleeding and the heart started working properly. Now, three and a half months had passed and the child was recovering but did not move.
Then just as he started moving, he was afflicted with a very large and strange pus-filled abscess in his head, the likes of which I had never seen. I informed his mother of the serious development. She said “Alhamdulillah” and left me.
We immediately turned him over to the surgical unit that deals with the brain and nervous system and they took over his treatment. Three weeks later, the boy recovered from this abscess but was still not moving. Two weeks pass and he suffers from a strange blood poisoning and his temperature reaches 41.2°C (106°F).
I again informed his mother of the serious development and she said with patience and certainty: “Alhamdulillah. O ALLAH, if there is good in his recovery, then cure him.”
After seeing his mother who was with her child at Bed#5, I went to see another child at Bed#6. I found that child’s mother crying and screaming, “Doctor! Doctor! Do something! The boy’s temperature reached 37.6°C (99.68°F)!
He’s going to die! He’s going to die!” I said with surprise, “Look at the mother of that child in Bed#5. Her child’s fever is over 41°C (106°F), yet she is patient and praises ALLAH.” So she replied: “That woman isn’t conscious and has no senses”.
At that point, I remembered the great Hadith of the Prophet (Sallallaahu Alaihi Wa Sallam): “Blessed are the strangers.” Just two words… but indeed two words that shake a nation! In 23 years of hospital service, I have never seen the likes of this patient sister.
We continued to care for him. Now, six and a half months have passed and the boy finally came out of the recovery unit – not talking, not seeing, not hearing, not moving, not smiling, and with an open chest in which you can see his beating heart. The mother changed the dressing regularly and remained patient and hopeful.
Do you know what happened after that? Before I inform you, what do you think are the prospects of a child who has passed through all these dangers, agonies, and diseases? And what do you expect this patient mother to do whose child is at the brink of the grave and who is unable to do anything except supplicate and beseech ALLAH? Do you know what happened two and a half months later?
The boy was completely cured by the mercy of ALLAH and as a reward for this pious mother. He now races his mother with his feet as if nothing happened and he became sound and healthy as he was before.
The story doesn’t end here. This is not what moved me and brought tears to my eyes. What filled my eyes with tears is what follows:
One and a half years after the child left the hospital, one of the brothers from the Operations Unit informed me that a man, his wife and two children wanted to see me.
I asked who they were and he replied that he didn’t know them. So I went to see them, and I found the parents of the same child whom I operated upon. He was now five years old and like a flower in good health – as if nothing happened to him. With them also was a four-month old newborn.
I welcomed them kindly and then jokingly asked the father whether the newborn was the 13th or 14th child. He looked at me with an astonishing smile as if he pitied me. He then said, “This is the second child, and the child upon whom you operated is our first born, bestowed upon us after 17 years of infertility. And after being granted that child, he was afflicted with the conditions that you’ve seen.”
At hearing this, I couldn’t control myself and my eyes filled with tears. I then involuntarily grabbed the man by the arm, and pulling him to my room, asked him about his wife:
“Who is this wife of yours who after 17 years of infertility has this much patience with all the fatal conditions that afflict her first born?! Her heart cannot be barren! It must be fertile with Imaan!”Do you know what he said? Listen carefully my dear brothers and sisters. Your time to POP will come at God's appointed time.
1. Popcorns are normally fried in the same pot, in the same oil, at the same time and under the same heat conditions,But they do not all pop at the same time.
2. When flood comes, fish eat ants and When flood recedes, ants eat fish, Only time matters.
3. To make soap, oil is required and to clean oil, soap is required. This is the irony of life.
Everybody needs somebody at any one point in time. Do not despise or treat anyone with scorn when they are excelling or failing more than you. There is time for EVERYTHING and for EVERYONE .Keep TRUSTING in God and WAIT for your turn. Your time to POP will come at God's appointed time. NEVER GIVE UP! He makes all things beautiful in his own time.
_To understand what life is, you have to visit three locations:_
*1.* The hospital,
*2.* The prison and
*3.* The Cemetery.
*At the Hospital,*
you will understand that nothing is more beautiful than health.
*In prison,*
you'll see that freedom is the most precious thing.
*At the cemetary,*
you will realize that life is worth nothing, the ground we walk today will be our roof tomorrow.
Let us therefore remain humble by having the fear of God and respect for everyone in our society.

John’s school had begun using the devices with younger and younger grades — and his technology teacher had raved about their educational benefits — so Susan wanted to do what was best for her sandy-haired boy who loved reading and playing baseball.
She started letting John play different educational games on his iPad. Eventually, he discovered Minecraft, which the technology teacher assured her was “just like electronic Lego.” Remembering how much fun she had as a child building and playing with the interlocking plastic blocks, Susan let her son Minecraft his afternoons away.
At first, Susan was quite pleased. John seemed engaged in creative play as he explored the cube-world of the game. She did notice that the game wasn’t quite like the Legos that she remembered — after all, she didn’t have to kill animals and find rare minerals to survive and get to the next level with her beloved old game. But John did seem to really like playing and the school even had a Minecraft club, so how bad could it be?
Still, Susan couldn’t deny she was seeing changes in John. He started getting more and more focused on his game and losing interest in baseball and reading while refusing to do his chores. Some mornings he would wake up and tell her that he could see the cube shapes in his dreams.
Although that concerned her, she thought her son might just be exhibiting an active imagination. As his behavior continued to deteriorate, she tried to take the game away but John threw temper tantrums. His outbursts were so severe that she gave in, still rationalizing to herself over and over again that “it’s educational.”
Then, one night, she realized that something was seriously wrong.
“I walked into his room to check on him. He was supposed to be sleeping — and I was just so frightened…”
She found him sitting up in his bed staring wide-eyed, his bloodshot eyes looking into the distance as his glowing iPad lay next to him. He seemed to be in a trance. Beside herself with panic, Susan had to shake the boy repeatedly to snap him out of it. Distraught, she could not understand how her once-healthy and happy little boy had become so addicted to the game that he wound up in a catatonic stupor.
There’s a reason that the most tech-cautious parents are tech designers and engineers. Steve Jobs was a notoriously low-tech parent. Silicon Valley tech executives and engineers enroll their kids in no-tech Waldorf Schools. Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page went to no-tech Montessori Schools, as did Amazon creator Jeff Bezos and Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales.
Many parents intuitively understand that ubiquitous glowing screens are having a negative effect on kids. We see the aggressive temper tantrums when the devices are taken away and the wandering attention spans when children are not perpetually stimulated by their hyper-arousing devices. Worse, we see children who become bored, apathetic, uninteresting and uninterested when not plugged in.
But it’s even worse than we think.
We now know that those iPads, smartphones and Xboxes are a form of digital drug. Recent brain imaging research is showing that they affect the brain’s frontal cortex — which controls executive functioning, including impulse control — in exactly the same way that cocaine does. Technology is so hyper-arousing that it raises dopamine levels — the feel-good neurotransmitter most involved in the addiction dynamic — as much as sex.
This addictive effect is why Dr. Peter Whybrow, director of neuroscience at UCLA, calls screens “electronic cocaine” and Chinese researchers call them “digital heroin.” In fact, Dr. Andrew Doan, the head of addiction research for the Pentagon and the US Navy — who has been researching video game addiction — calls video games and screen technologies “digital pharmakeia” (Greek for drug).
That’s right — your kid’s brain on Minecraft looks like a brain on drugs. No wonder we have a hard time peeling kids from their screens and find our little ones agitated when their screen time is interrupted. In addition, hundreds of clinical studies show that screens increase depression, anxiety and aggression and can even lead to psychotic-like features where the video gamer loses touch with reality.
In my clinical work with over 1,000 teens over the past 15 years, I have found the old axiom of “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” to be especially true when it comes to tech addiction. Once a kid has crossed the line into true tech addiction, treatment can be very difficult. Indeed, I have found it easier to treat heroin and crystal meth addicts than lost-in-the-matrix video gamers or Facebook-dependent social media addicts.
According to a 2013 Policy Statement by the American Academy of Pediatrics, 8- to 10 year-olds spend 8 hours a day with various digital media while teenagers spend 11 hours in front of screens. One in three kids are using tablets or smartphones before they can talk. Meanwhile, the handbook of “Internet Addiction” by Dr. Kimberly Young states that 18 percent of college-age internet users in the US suffer from tech addiction.
Once a person crosses over the line into full-blown addiction — drug, digital or otherwise — they need to detox before any other kind of therapy can have any chance of being effective. With tech, that means a full digital detox — no computers, no smartphones, no tablets. The extreme digital detox even eliminates television. The prescribed amount of time is four to six weeks; that’s the amount of time that is usually required for a hyper-aroused nervous system to reset itself. But that’s no easy task in our current tech-filled society where screens are ubiquitous. A person can live without drugs or alcohol; with tech addiction, digital temptations are everywhere.
So how do we keep our children from crossing this line? It’s not easy.
The key is to prevent your 4-, 5- or 8-year-old from getting hooked on screens to begin with. That means Lego instead of Minecraft; books instead of iPads; nature and sports instead of TV. If you have to, demand that your child’s school not give them a tablet or Chromebook until they are at least 10 years old (others recommend 12).
Have honest discussions with your child about why you are limiting their screen access. Eat dinner with your children without any electronic devices at the table — just as Steve Jobs used to have tech-free dinners with his kids. Don’t fall victim to “Distracted Parent Syndrome” — as we know from Social Learning Theory, “Monkey see, monkey do.”
When I speak to my 9-year-old twin boys, I have honest conversations with them about why we don’t want them having tablets or playing video games. I explain to them that some kids like playing with their devices so much, they have a hard time stopping or controlling how much they play. I’ve helped them to understand that if they get caught up with screens and Minecraft like some of their friends have, other parts of their lives may suffer: They may not want to play baseball as much; not read books as often; be less interested in science and nature projects; become more disconnected from their real-world friends. Amazingly, they don’t need much convincing as they’ve seen first-hand the changes that some of their little friends have undergone as a result of their excessive screen time.
Developmental psychologists understand that children’s healthy development involves social interaction, creative imaginative play and an engagement with the real, natural world. Unfortunately, the immersive and addictive world of screens dampens and stunts those developmental processes.
We also know that kids are more prone to addictive escape if they feel alone, alienated, purposeless and bored. Thus the solution is often to help kids to connect to meaningful real-life experiences and flesh-and-blood relationships. The engaged child tethered to creative activities and connected to his or her family is less likely to escape into the digital fantasy world. Yet even if a child has the best and most loving support, he or she could fall into the Matrix once they engage with hypnotic screens and experience their addicting effect. After all, about one in 10 people are predisposed towards addictive tendencies.
In the end, my client Susan removed John’s tablet, but recovery was an uphill battle with many bumps and setbacks along the way.
Four years later, after much support and reinforcement, John is doing much better today. He has learned to use a desktop computer in a healthier way, and has gotten some sense of balance back in his life: He’s playing on a baseball team and has several close friends in his middle school. But his mother is still vigilant and remains a positive and proactive force with his tech usage because, as with any addiction, relapse can sneak up in moments of weakness. Making sure that he has healthy outlets, no computer in his bedroom and a nightly tech-free dinner at the dinner table are all part of the solution.

THE SADDEST DAY IN MY LIFE
Yesterday was the saddest day in my life. Iwas around my school when I saw a young lady seriously complaining about her stolenphone. So I went near her to listen to what she was saying... I was also downloading songs with my phone at that same time... Immediately she saw my phone she told the crowd that's her phone with me. For a moment I couldn't even open my mouth, I wasso confused. She held me and gave me volcanic slaps. The crowd attempted to beat me up. But luckily a policeman was passing by and he came to the scene. He asked what was going on and I explained with tears and sweat all over my face. He sent me to the police station together with the woman and I still explained to the policeman that i was innocent.. So the policeman asked the woman to call her phone. She called and a girl picked and toldthe woman it was her daughter. The girl told the woman that she left her phone at home when she was leaving to school, I evencried a river because I had already been disgraced. The policeman told the woman to settle me with some money. The woman wrote a cheque of 5 billion naira and wanted to hand it over to me but it was just too much for me so I just opened my eyes, stood up from my bed and went to urinate ... #sneezes
